JULIE STRAIN: AMAZIN' AMAZON

Julie Strain "I have a certain power over men," Julie Strain declares, her eyes glinting. A lot of men agree. "I've seen her in movies and in person," says down-home TV movie host Joe Bob Briggs, "and I never know if she wants to have sex with me or kill me. And ya know what? I don't care!" Stunningly gorgeous and impossibly tall, Strain modestly labels herself "Queen of All Media," with due deference to Howard Stern as "King." Says the towering temptress, "I love Howard. On his show, I sat on his lap, and he spanked my bare ass. As for being Queen, I think I've done enough work that nobody will ever dethrone me."

THE DIRTY POLITICS OF FOOD, PART 3

Bad Food? How safe is the American food supply? Not from the likes of terrorists who may dream of finding ways to poison us in great numbers but from the Food and Drug Administration and the nation's own corporate food suppliers. According to the August issue of HUSTLER magazine, about 60% of all processed food is genetically modified, with no labeling required. There are new types of corn that produce their own pesticide. Animals are dosed with antibiotics to increase their size – and profitability. But does this use of antibiotics promote super-bugs in humans that are tougher to fight? Concerned yet? According to a report by investigative writer Philip Mattera, the U.S. Department of Agriculture is turning consumers into unwitting guinea pigs for the biotech industry's new frontier of production. Japan has even taken a wait-and-see attitude and will watch America's children for a decade or so before deciding to follow our lead. The labeling paradigm we should be able to rely on when making our choices in the store only seems to add to consumer confusion about what's good for us. For example, using a practice called "clean labeling" manufacturers are allowed to state a certain product contains no monosodium glutamate even though MSG may be hidden within other ingredients. A similar problem exists with artificial flavorings. Most are granted GRAS status by the FDA and don't require specific labeling. "Companies have a right to protect trade formulas," says Robert Cohen, founder of the Dairy Education Board. "But if it's factory-made, I don't eat it." So what does this say about the FDA and its responsibility to American food consumers? And what should the Obama administration do to assuage the fear and confusion surrounding our most basic necessity?

THE Q&A: RUSS BAKER

RUSS BAKER George W. Bush's legacy of destruction will linger for years to come. In his latest book, Family of Secrets, Russ Baker—who has written for Vanity Fair, the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Nation, Esquire, the New Yorker and many others—unravels the web of deceit spun by the Bush clan. Here Baker reveals that the scheming Bushes are very different from the benevolent patriarch and bungling son the media portrays. Worse yet, they may have more nasty plans in store for America.
