On The Set of Barely Legal #75
Hustler Video's Barely Legal is unquestionably the most voluminous adult series currently in production. Started by the late Clive McLean in 1999, the line places just of-age girls in fun, youthful, (sometimes) cliché-for porn sexual situations. The formula proved so successful that Clive's passing did not spell the end of the series. Barely Legal has actually grown to include over 8 separate lines, with numerous directors placing their own visual stamp on the brand. One such auteur (Editor's Note: Don't know how to feel about that word choice.) is Erica McLean, who started the line with her husband and recently finished production of the seventy-fifth title in the series.
When we were offered the opportunity to drop by the shooting of Barely Legal #75, we jumped at the chance. Erica is one of the nicest people in all of porndom and, honestly, we loves us some teenagers. From our understanding, no matter how old we get, they will remain the same age.
We arrived at Erica's ranch in Sunland and were immediately overwhelmed by the smell of horse. Having never been to this location before, we had it in our heads that "ranch" meant the style of home. We weren't expecting a ranch ranch. But that's what we got, complete with horses and dust-covered dogs wandering around. It was a welcome respite from the concrete and carbon monoxide that Los Angeles offers.
We got to set shortly before the first scene began filming. Alexis Love, who happens to be 18—so the sobriquet 'barely legal' applies, was playing a sex-starved girlfriend trying to convince her man to stop working on his car and start working on her naughty bits. Seeing as how all teenage girls these days seem to be dirty little whores—we will never have daughters—it wasn't too much of a stretch for Ms. Love to get into character. After much sun-drenched, sweaty banging, the duo finished their scene and the crew began preparations for the next one, a poolside orgy involving nine thousand (six, actually) girls.
Erica wanted to shoot the "whorgy" (we totally just made that up) closer to sunset, so much of our afternoon was spent mouth agape as one girl after another made their way into the makeup chair and out of their clothing. It's hard to pinpoint why, but being surrounded by naked woman has this weird affect on us. We turn into giggling retards and we text message everyone we know: "We're surrounded by naked 18-year-olds...how's your master's thesis/working for Congress/volunteering for the Peace Corps going?"
We pulled ourselves together long enough to actually talk with a few of the girls featured in the movie. Alexis Love was shooting her 4th scene in 2 days, so she was understandably tired. Jenny Hendrix hates alliteration so much she changed her porn name from Hanna Hendrix.
But it was Faye Runaway, replete with tattoos, who stood out for us. She not only won the coveted HW award for funniest porn name, but provided the biggest shock of the day.
When we ask starlets what their long-term plans are, we've grown accustomed to: "get a contract" or "start directing" or "you mean this weekend?" In the six decades we've been covering this industry not once has anyone responded with, "I want to get a degree in cultural anthropology." Even on the rare occurrence someone tells us they want to go to college; they usually want to become nurses. Our only concern for Ms. Runaway's ivory tower pursuits is that a cultural anthropology degree is kind of useless in terms of job market viability. And everybody knows that the only reason you should go to college is to get a better job not, you know, to actually learn anything.
We could have spent the rest of the day discussing the finer points of social construction and cultural identity with the young lass, but it was not to be.
Unfortunately, the gambling addiction of our car-pool buddy required that we leave before taping of the writhing woman pile began. We may have missed out, but we're sure that when Barely Legal #75 hits shelves the viewer won't.
